Providence — An advocacy group for church sex-abuse victims said Friday that newly revealed court documents suggest the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence has been less than forthcoming about the number of priests accused of sexual misconduct.

Members of BishopAccountabilty.org passed out copies of the documents near Providence Superior Court.

The group said the documents show 125 priests in the diocese were accused of sexual abuse since 1971. In 2004, the diocese reported 56 cases of sexual abuse since the 1950s.

Advocates for alleged sex-abuse victims called for state and federal investigations.

Judge Netti Vogel ordered the documents released during a court case last year. The diocese told NBC 10 that the court's order was broader and covered a different time frame, which accounts for the difference in numbers.

"Judge Vogel's discovery order required listing of 'any notice of any allegation against any priest' of any sexual misconduct against a priest, living or deceased regardless of whether such allegations were credible, or, on the other hand, vague, anonymous, withdrawn or ultimately found to be false," the diocese said in a statement.

The diocese said that it has one of the strongest anti-abuse programs in the United States.
