MERRIMACK – Carolyn Disco of Merrimack was the recipient of the Catherine of Siena Award from the Catholic reform group Voice of the Faithful. It is the highest award that VOTF gives to a layperson.

In announcing the award, the nominating committee stated: "Carolyn has just amazed all of us with her dedication to the support of the abused, attempting to right what is wrong with the hierarchy in New Hampshire as well as throughout the country. Carolyn has provided a wealth of information on a minute's notice with regard to the law, both civil and canon."

The award is given to those that encounter corruption and crisis in the church and make an effort to end it, according to VOTF President Mary Pat Fox.

The Catherine of Siena award was introduced at the 2005 VOTF convocation in Indianapolis.

The group's national convention "Voice of the Faithful-Disciples In Action" began Friday and continues today at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

The topics addressed in the nearly 30 workshops and panel discussions include "Discipleship and its revival at Vatican II;" "Called to be a Church: A model for participatory pastoral planning;" "Who says it's time to blow out the candles?" – a panel on parish closings; and "Googling God," a workshop on making the Church relevant to the 20- and 30-something generations.
