Providence, R.I. (AP) — After reviewing its documents, the Diocese of Providence says 85 of its priests have been accused of sexual assault or sexual misconduct since 1971.

That's lower than the diocese's count of 125 that a child sex abuse survivor's group discovered in a court filing.

Both numbers are higher than what the diocese reported in 2004, when it said 56 priests were accused of child sex abuse between 1950 and 2002.

The diocese said the number in the court filing was inflated because it included vague, anonymous, withdrawn or false allegations. And after a careful document review, the diocese decreased that count of 125 to 85.

Attorney General Patrick Lynch says he was concerned about the previously unreported cases and would look into the matter.
