A County Londonderry priest has had indecent assault charges against him dropped.

Father Patrick Crilly was accused of two offences against a teenage girl dating back to the 1970s.

On Monday, the Public Prosecution Service told Londonderry Crown Court they were not offering any evidence.

The jury was then ordered to find him not guilty by direction. After leaving the court, Father Crilly said the "awful nightmare" was over.

He said it was one that had lasted two years and involved more than 20 court appearances.

Fr Crilly paid tribute to the support of other clergy and said it was too early to talk about his future plans.
