An Ulster priest has spoken of his relief after being cleared of sexually assaulting a teenage schoolgirl.

Father Patrick Joseph Crilly, who lives in Desertmartin, Co Londonderry was speaking outside Derry Crown Court after a jury was instructed to find him not guilty of two charges of indecent assault on a date unknown between September 1 1977 and November 1978.

Prosecution barrister Stephen Fowler QC told the jury that no evidence would be submitted and His Honour Judge Philip Babington instructed the jury to find Fr Crilly not guilty.

Fr Edward Kilpatrick, who was himself cleared of sexual abuse allegations in 1997, was in the packed courtroom alongside parishioners and the cleric's brother Fr Oliver Crilly, who also serves in a Co Derry parish.
