A monk convicted of sexually assaulting novice monks at a monastery outside of Blanco was sentenced to 80 years in prison.

William Hughes, 57, got the maximum sentence after a Blanco County jury convicted him Wednesday on four counts of sexual assault of a child.

Two former novice monks accused Hughes and other senior monks of abusing them when they were teenagers living at the Christ of the Hills Monastery in the 1990s. Three other monks await trial.

The monastery's leader, Samuel A. Greene Jr., died of an apparent drug overdose last month.
