LAKELAND -- The Lakeland Police Department is looking into allegations of abuse against students who attend an area church, a police spokesman announced Sunday.

Detectives are investigating allegations of abuse of middle and high school age students who attend or who have attended The First Baptist Church at the Mall, 1010 East Memorial Blvd.

Spokesman Jack Gillen would not specify who was the target of the investigation was or if the person still works at the church, citing an ongoing investigation.

Investigators say the church is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Tim Parcheta, the church's executive director, said they learned of the allegations earlier this week. He said the person who is accused of the abuse is a volunteer with their student ministry, and has been banned from their campus.

Parishoners were told of the investigation during services, today.

Any persons with information is asked to contact Sergeant Gary Gross, Lakeland Police Department, at (863) 834-8980.
