Child protection advocates are urging the Anglican Church to de-frock a priest convicted of child sexual abuse.

Robert Sharwood, 63, who remains an ordained minister, was released from prison today after serving 12 months in jail for sexually assaulting a teenage boy while at Saint Matthew's Anglican Church in the Brisbane suburb of Sherwood.

The church's Professional Standards Board is expected to meet before Christmas to determine if he is a fit and proper person to hold holy orders.

But Bravehearts spokeswoman Hetty Johnston says the time for inquiries and tribunals has ended.

"I would hope that any person convicted of child sex offences is not fit to be a priest and that is clear for everybody to see, including the church," she said.

"So they've come a very, very long way the Anglican Church - they should be very proud of what they've done.

"But this is something off the ark that they need to change very quickly."
