The Diocese of Scranton has reached a $3 million settlement with a man who was abused by Rev. Albert Liberatore, ending a two-day trial that had revealed damaging information regarding the church's handling of this and other abuse cases.

The settlement was reached Tuesday night after the close of testimony in the trial.

Daniel Brier, attorney for the victim, had presented several witnesses who detailed deep concerns they had relayed to church officials regarding Liberatore's behavior with the teenage boy – warnings that went unheeded, allowing Liberatore to abuse him from 1999 to 2002.

Church attorneys had argued none of the witnesses ever said they suspected sexual abuse. While acknowledging diocesan officials "were not perfect," they said they had done the best they could under the circumstances.
