The Catholic priest accused of stalking "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien could be sprung from jail shortly, after a Manhattan judge Friday set a $2,500 cash bail for him.

The Rev. David Ajemian was found fit to stand trial during a bail hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court, in which his defense lawyer said the Boston priest has long battled psychiatric problems.

"The struggles my client has had with his medication has gone on for many, many years," said attorney Eric Seiff, adding that the priest had clearly stopped taking his medicine.

Ajemian, 46, was arrested last week while trying to get into a taping of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." He is accused of stalking the comedian - acting out an obsession he’s harbored for years.

Prosecutors said Ajemian wrote a note to O’Brien warning that he was "tracking him through space and time."

The Harvard-educated priest also allegedly ranted in writing at O'Brien's treatment of his "most dangerous fan." Authorities charge that Ajemian also contacted O'Brien's mother in Massachusetts.

But Seiff said it would be "tragic" if Ajemian - who has also allegedly harassed tennis great John McEnroe in his letters - were to remain jailed.

"He poses no danger," Seiff insisted.

Ajemian's parents were in court for the bail hearing, along with a priest representing the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, who said he was asked to attend by the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley.

"The Cardinal's concern is for everyone, including the O'Briens," said Msgr. Dennis Sheehan.
