A former priest at St. Rose Catholic Church in the 1950s, now deceased, has been named in a lawsuit filed Tuesday against the Archdiocese of Seattle based on childhood sexual abuse.

The plaintiff, a Port Orchard man, alleges the Rev. Edward Boyle began sexually molesting him in the early 1970s when Boyle was working for the Archdiocese at Holy Trinity Church in Bremerton. The man said the abuse began at about age 13 when he was an altar boy.

Last month the Archdiocese settled out of court another lawsuit that named Boyle. The victim in that case said Boyle molested him for 11 years, beginning in 1956, at Immaculate Conception Church in Everett. The victim received a $270,000 settlement.

In the early 1950s, Boyle had been assigned to St. Rose Parish in Longview, according to the Fleck Law Firm in Seattle. He died in 1987.

Attorney Mary Fleck said by telephone Tuesday she hoped other victims or people with information about victims would come forward.

"It's helpful to hear from anyone who has information about Father Boyle's contact with children," Fleck said. "Sometimes people don't come forward until they have courage, and sometimes that takes a very long time."
