In a story yesterday about Bishop Gerald Kicanas' being chosen as vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests criticized the choice. A later version of that story, which was not posted on StarNet, included a response from the Diocese of Tucson, which is printed here.

"I challenge (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests national director, David) Clohessy to be specific about anything in Bishop Kicanas' record that is terrible," said diocesan spokesman Fred Allison.

"This is a broadside statement that has no basis in fact. We at the diocese could not be more proud and pleased that Bishop Kicanas has been elected as vice president."

In Baltimore, where the conference met, Kicanas expressed gratitude at his peers' decision. If tradition holds, Kicanas would be chosen three years from now to step up to the presidency, but he said, "that's not an automatic."

One of his most painful and difficult times was meeting some victims of clergy abuse "to hear of their pain," the bishop said. "My impression is that the victims have felt understood."

He also recalled that victims who joined him at a news conference after the bankruptcy proceedings felt that the resolution was fair and helpful to all victims.
