QUEBEC city -- Marc Cardinal Ouellet, the Catholic primate of Canada, has issued a wide-ranging apology for past wrongs committed by church members.

In an open letter, printed in Quebec French-language newspapers, Ouellet asks for forgiveness for anti-semitism, racism, mistreatment of aboriginal peoples and discrimination against women and homosexuals.

It goes on to acknowledge that children's lives were ruined after they fell victim to sexual abuse by members of the clergy. Such scandals have destroyed the public's confidence in religious authorities, it says.
