A Grey Bruce group is hoping to reach out to men who have been sexually abused in their childhood or teen years.

Hearing, Healing, Hope is a pilot project in Grey-Bruce, with funding from the Ministry of the Attorney General.

Co-ordinator May Tettero says there have been outreach programs for women who have been sexually abused, but no real program for men.

Tettro adds the seminars combine Western medical practices of psychology with aboriginal healing practices.

She also works as a group facilitator and acknowledges the courage and strength it takes for the men to come forward and talk about what happened to them.

Tettero adds they work in group seminars which provides an element of support, and helps men understand they're not the only ones who have experienced something like this.

She says the statistics in Canada show 1 in 5 men will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.

Today — there is a special workshop at the Days Inn in Owen Sound for those who provide services for sexually abused men.

Tettero says guest speaker Michael Church will be there. Church is a survivor of sexual abuse and an advisor to the Cornwall Inquiry — a special government commission that looked into allegations of abuse of young people.
