The discovery of 50,000 pictures and 100 films of child pornography resulted from a clever ploy by a pediatrician, a victim told Eyewitness News on Wednesday.

The victim, who did not want to be identified, wanted to speak out now that proof has surfaced to support the accusations he knew as true for the past 40 years.

The remodeling of a basement in a West Hartford home uncovered the pornography that depicts naked children. The owners of the home, located in the 100 block of Griswold Drive, discovered a hidden secret room in the basement.

Investigators said the evidence points to a previous homeowner: Dr. George Reardon, who worked at St. Francis Hospital for more than 30 years.

Doctor's Face Burned Into Victim's Mind

"They said 'Reardon' and I'm thinking, 'Thank God,'" the victim said.

It was a name the victim knew and a face that was burned into his mind. He shared with Eyewitness News a story that transported him back 40 years to St. Francis Hospital.

"He actually came to my room on at least two occasions that I can remember and picked me up in a wheelchair and rolled me to his office, where it happened," the victim said.

Reardon called the after-hours sessions part of a study of early maturing teens, investigators said. The doctor got parents to sign off on their children's participation.

"I had actually heard him explain it all to my mother," the victim recalled. "I heard my mother tell him that, 'If it would help me or other kids, it was OK with her.' But he never got into details of what this study entailed. He never told my mother that he was going to have me undress and take pictures of me or touch me inappropriately. She just thought it was some kind of article he was writing."

The victim added, "He not only did what he did to me physically, he brought out pictures of other naked kids -- both boys and girls -- and asked me if they excited me."

Victim: Mental Scars Remain

The victim never went to the police until Wednesday, when he heard of the West Hartford discovery. He said he never knew there were other victims, saying he thought he was the only one.

"Even after all these years, not a whole week has ever gone by that it hasn't crossed my mind, and I sincerely wish he was still around to pay for that, either civilly or criminally," the victim said.

The man said he knows Reardon had an associate, and he wonders if that person knew what was going on.

Police said they are concerned that Reardon may have distributed the pictures. Investigators said they believe hundreds of other victims may remain unidentified.
