Bernie Ward, Liberal Talk Show Host, Indicted on Child Pornography Charges

December 6, 2007

Bernie Ward, a liberal talk show host out of San Francisco, turned himself in to federal authorities earlier today to face two charges of child pornography using the internet.

The 56-year-old former Catholic priest is believed to have downloaded images of child pornography. A charge his lawyer contends was for a book Ward was writing on hypocrisy in America.

Ward had hosted a nightly news program on KGO 810 AM and has been a popular spokesman on liberal issues in the Bay Area. A statement released by the station's operation director read, "Ward has been a valued, long-time employee of KGO Radio. We were just recently made aware of these serious charges and are surprised and concerned by their nature."

According to Ward's lawyer Doron Weinberg the federal government was aware of the nature of the research being done four years ago. Weinberg was quoted as saying the federal government "investigated and they never found any involvement in child pornography other than this period that he accessed these images. The government knows that Bernie was doing this for an investigation he was doing for a book. But the government believes he violated the letter of the law and they have gone ahead and prosecuted him."
