Madrid — A Spanish court has ruled in favor of a Catholic priest who brought a criminal complaint against his own archbishop.

Archbishop Francisco Javier Martinez Fernandez of Granada has been found guilty on charges of attempted intimidation, and fined €3,750 (about $5,500). The court rule that the archbishop had illegally sought to stop Father Francisco Javier Martinez Media, a former archdiocesan archivist, from publishing a book about the city's cathedral.

Before and during the trial, Archbishop Martinez argued that the secular court had no authority to intervene in a matter of internal Church discipline.
