Cardinal Roger Mahony, 71, had an obligation to report a beating he says he received in late July or early August.

Instead, the former Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Stockton waited until October and told a private gathering of Los Angeles priests that he was attacked because of the church's sex-abuse scandals.

Los Angeles police have contacted Mahony's office but still are waiting to hear from him.

" Quote: "Like Jesus, we must offer our lives and even suffer for Christ, even for things we didn't do," said Rev. Joseph Shea of Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, adding that Mahony had to be hospitalized because of the severity of his injuries.

" Bottom line: Mahony needs to report the crime. This isn't about martyrdom. It's about the safety of the neighborhood near Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral where Mahony says the assault occurred.
