A 73-year-old bookkeeper at a Belmont church was arrested Thursday in connection with more than $104,000 that was discovered missing from church bank accounts.

Evelyn Francis Graham of the 200 block of Michael Dominick Road in Belmont is charged with 20 counts of embezzlement, a news release from the Belmont Police Department said.

Graham was suspended as a bookkeeper from Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 503 North Main St., last week after an audit revealed the missing money.

She is accused of writing 85 checks, totaling $104,290, in her name and other people's names, over several years, the release said.

The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte started an audit at the church last month, after church members noticed discrepancies in financial records, said David Hains, communications director for the diocese.

The audit, which isn't yet complete, showed that the checks have been written since at least 2004, the Rev. Frank Cancro said. The amount missing may increase as the audit continues, Cancro said. Graham has worked at the church since 2001, he said.

Cancro, pastor of the church since July, told church members about the missing money during weekend services.
