  Tennessee Priest to Be Bishop in Missouri

WASHINGTON, D.C., JAN. 24, 2008 - Benedict XVI named Father Vann Johnston Jr., the chancellor of the Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee, as bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The 48-year-old priest will succeed Bishop John Leibrecht, 77, who presented his retirement to the Pope.

Bishop-designate Johnston, a native of Knoxville, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Knoxville in 1990.

James Vann Johnston Jr. was born in 1959. He attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He later attended St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana where he earned a master of divinity degree. He attended graduate school from 1994-1996 at the Catholic University of America where he earned a licentiate in canon law.

In 1996 he was named diocesan chancellor, and in 2001 was given the additional responsibilities of moderator of the curia. He also served as pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Alcoa since 2007.

The Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese has a population of about 1.2 million, with some 64,700 Catholics.
