The Catholic Diocese of Phoenix has been accused of failing to take the proper steps against a Valley priest awaiting trial on sex charges.

Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, is a national group for victims of priests.

Spokeswoman Barbara Dorris said the church is not doing enough about Monsignor Dale Fushek, who is on administrative leave as a priest and has been preaching at non-denominational services in Mesa.

"They can defrock this predator, they can stop paying this predator," Dorris said. "Their actions will speak louder than words."

Dorris said the church can defrock Fushek if it wants.

Fushek, former pastor of St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Mesa, founder of the Life Teen program and once the No. 2 man in the Phoenix diocese, faces seven misdemeanor charges involving teen-aged boys. They include five misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one count of assault and one of indecent exposure.

Fushek is not accused of molestation, but his case has drawn national attention from victims' groups, including SNAP, because of Life Teen's worldwide membership.

The diocese said Thursday it could not respond to Dorris' comments because it had not received a letter SNAP said it has sent.
