DES MOINES -- The Davenport Diocese will use contributions from four of its parishes to help pay a $37 million settlement with people who were allegedly sexually abused by priests, the diocese announced Thursday.

The four parishes with the most serious claims of clergy abuse will collect donations to pay their share, said Deacon David Montgomery, spokesman for the diocese.

The names of the parishes will not be released until their leaders tell parishioners about the donations.

The diocese is seeking a combined $5.9 million from the parishes and the St. Vincent Home Corp., a diocese-based organization.

Overall, the diocese will pay $17.5 million toward the settlement. The diocese's insurance company, Travelers Insurance, will pay the rest.

The diocese already has raised nearly $4 million by giving its headquarters, the St. Vincent Center, to creditors.

Besides the parish donations, the diocese will need another $7.7 million to cover its share. Montgomery said the diocese is still considering options for raising the money, including borrowing money.
