HAMMONTON -- An assistant wrestling coach at St. Joseph High School was dismissed from his duties following an investigation of allegations of inappropriate behavior toward students on the school wrestling team.

Joseph Mauro, who also teaches math, was terminated from his positions Feb. 7, following an investigation by the school, according to Andrew Walton, a spokesman with the Diocese of Camden.

School principal Lynn Domenico addressed the situation in a Feb. 7 letter to parents of students at the school.

"While this has been difficult for everyone involved, the action was necessary given the standards of conduct expected of our school faculty and the mutual respect we have for each other in our school community," Domenico said in her letter.

Walton said Mauro, whose age and hometown were not immediately available, had been employed at the school since December.

The investigation stemmed from an alleged incident on Feb. 5, Walton said.

Walton declined comment on the alleged incident.

"I'll let the letter speak for itself," Walton said, referring to Domenico's letter.

The matter has been forwarded to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office for its review in accordance with an agreement between the prosecutor and the diocese, Walton said. Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Madeline Vitale confirmed the matter has been forwarded to the office.

Representatives from St. Joseph declined further comment, referring calls to the Diocese of Camden offices.

Wrestling coach Alan Sullivan did not return telephone messages seeking comment by press time Tuesday.

The St. Joseph wrestling team more than doubled its win total from a year ago, but still had a losing record. The dual-meet season is over but the wrestlers are competing in the District 30 wrestling tournament on Friday.
