A once-prominent Jesuit priest convicted of molesting two boys in the 1960s was officially defrocked Friday.

The Rev. Donald J. McGuire has been permanently expelled from his religious order and removed from all clerical duties, according to a statement from the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus.

The Rev. Edward Schmidt, head of the Chicago Jesuits, said the order is "outraged and saddened that any abuse ever took place."

"... Through the years, Donald McGuire has had a tremendous impact on the religious lives of many people," Schmidt said. "To these men and women of deep faith and commitment, I want to say that I believe that he has terribly abused the trust they, and we, put in him."

The Chicago Jesuits needed Vatican approval before McGuire's dismissal, announced last fall, could be finalized.

McGuire, of Oak Lawn, was convicted by a Wisconsin jury in 2006 of molesting two boys from Loyola Academy in Wilmette in the 1960s. He was sentenced to seven years in prison but has remained free on bond, pending appeal.

New allegations led to a federal indictment last month on charges that McGuire, 77, traveled overseas with a minor with the intent of having sex with him.

McGuire could not be reached for comment Saturday.
