A man who claims he was molested as a boy by a representative of the Mormon church in Southeast Portland is suing the church for $20 million.

The man, whom The Oregonian isn't naming because he's an alleged victim of sexual abuse, claims that he was repeatedly abused in the 1970s by James Hogan, a volunteer youth minister in the Twelfth Stake in the 2900 block of Southeast Harrison Street.

Randall Vogt, the attorney who filed the suit, said Hogan was a Boy Scout leader, but abused the boy while working as a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The abuse is alleged to have happened for four years, starting when the boy was 9.

Stephen English, an attorney representing the church, said that the church condemns abuse.

"It takes all claims seriously and will investigate this thoroughly," English said.
