A meeting has been scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at Ace's, 316 Chestnut St. in Cambria City, to discuss the recent announcement by the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese that it intends to merge five parishes in that part of Johnstown into one congregation by July 2009.

The West End Improvement Group is organizing the meeting, Joe Hochstein, a member of West End Catholic school board, told The Tribune-Democrat Sunday night.

St. Stephen's Catholic Church is home to West End Catholic and is one of the five parishes facing merger.

Among those invited to the meeting are Cambria City businesses, city of Johnstown officials, representatives of Johnstown Area Heritage Association and Bottle Works-Ethnic Arts Center.

Hochstein said he feels sure the West End School situation will be part of the meeting.

School officials have said West End Catholic could become the parochial school for a new Cambria City consolidated parish.
