A Donegal Priest who is serving a 7 year jail term for raping a teenage girl in the church sacristy over 20 years ago is due to appeal his sentence and conviction today.

49 year old Fr Daniel Doherty of Derriscleigh, Carrigart was convicted by a jury in May 2006 on two charges each of rape and indecent assault on dates in 1984 and 1985.

In May 2006 a central criminal court jury found Daniel Doherty guilty on two charges of raping the then 13 year old girl in the church sacristy in 1985.

They convicted him of indecently assaulting her in the sacristy in 1985 and of indecently assaulting her in his car on a date in December 1984.

He gave evidence himself during the trial denying outright the allegations against him.

The court heard that the victim was unable to tell her family about it at the time but eventually told her sister who confronted the priest to no avail.

He told her that she was not to tell anyone and that people would believe a priest over her.

A Garda investigation took place after she made the allegations in a letter to the bishop of Raphoe in 2003

Doherty will appeal both his conviction and sentence today.
