BERLIN (AP) - A Regensburg court convicted a Roman Catholic priest Thursday of sexually abusing minors in his former parish and sentenced him to three years in a state-run psychiatric ward.

The priest, identified only as 40-year-old Peter K., confessed to abusing the now 15-year-old former victim, who filed the charges with the Regensburg state

court, and apologized to him.

It happened, he's sorry, Alois Koebl, an attorney for the priest, told reporters after the trial, adding that his client suffered from psychiatric problems.

Several other victims also came forward, leading the priest to face 22 counts of sexual abuse of minors, including one count of severe abuse of a minor.

Already in 2000, the priest was convicted of sexually abusing minors, but was handed a suspended one-year sentence. The Regensburg dioceses nevertheless then placed in a different parish in southern Germany, saying he had passed an examination by a psychiatrist who declared the priest fit for service.

Prosecutor Elfriede Schuetz disputed that, insisting he must be kept in the future from contact with the public.

The accused is clearly suffering from a homosexual pedophilia, Schuetz said.
