NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A Darien priest who stole about $1.3 million from his Darien parish to support a luxurious lifestyle has asked a judge to postpone the date he must report to federal prison.

The Rev. Michael Jude Fay was sentenced in New Haven federal court in December to 37 months in prison.

Fay's lawyer did not explain why Fay wanted to push back his surrender date from April 2. Fay has said he's dying from cancer.

Fay's attorney, Lawrence Hopkins of New Haven, has filed the motion under seal, meaning its contents are secret.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office says federal prosecutors plan to respond to Fay's motion.
