A Regensburg court convicted a Roman Catholic priest Thursday of sexually abusing minors in his former parish and sentenced him to three years in a state-run psychiatric ward.

The priest, identified only as 40-year-old Peter K., confessed to abusing the now 15-year-old former victim, who filed the charges with the Regensburg state court, and apologized to him.

"It happened, he's sorry," Alois Koebl, an attorney for the priest, told reporters after the trial, adding that his client suffered from psychiatric problems.

Several other victims also came forward, leading the priest to face 22 counts of sexual abuse of minors, including one count of severe abuse of a minor.
