NEW HAVEN, Conn. - A Darien priest who stole more than $1 million from his parish to support a luxurious lifestyle should show proof before he is allowed to postpone his reporting date to prison due to poor health, federal prosecutors said Friday.

The Rev. Michael Jude Fay was sentenced in December to 37 months in prison. Fay's lawyer did not explain why Fay wanted to push back his surrender date from April 2, but Fay has said he's dying from cancer.

Fay, who pleaded guilty to a federal fraud charge in September, set up secret bank accounts to pay for travel around the world and to buy a condominium, authorities say. He resigned in 2006 as pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church.
