(AP) — A man facing child abuse and sex offense charges in Maryland has resigned after more than six years as music minister at the 1,700-member Shades Crest Baptist Church in Hoover. Timothy Mann, 46, who was arrested Thursday morning in Hoover, was being held in the Jefferson County Jail, awaiting extradition to Maryland. A warrant issued Tuesday in Montgomery County, Md., shows Mann is charged with child abuse and a third-degree sex offense, Hoover police Capt. Jim Coker said. Officer Melanie Hadley of the Montgomery County Police Department said she could not release details on the charges. But Shades Crest Baptist pastor Dennis Foust told The Birmingham News that the charges "involve alleged abusive actions of sexual misconduct in the 1990s which may have occurred while he served a congregation in Maryland." Foust said his church was unaware of any sexual misconduct by Mann during his employment there, which began in December 2001. "Yet we are offering open conversation and counseling as needed to those who have been adversely affected by this alleged breach of trust by one of our staff members," Foust said. Foust said Mann passed a criminal background check before his hiring in accordance with a policy that has been in place at the church since 1994. Mann had no criminal record, he said. Mann also resigned from his job as an adjunct instructor at the Baptist-affiliated Samford University in Birmingham, where he was teaching a graduate music course this semester. In a statement, Samford University Provost Bradley Creed said Mann periodically taught at Samford as an adjunct instructor but not as a full-time or permanent part-time employee.
