Rev. Donald J. McGuire — already convicted of molesting two boys — has been charged with three counts of child molestation in Maricopa County, Ariz., police said.

A Chicago police officer appeared in court today at the Criminal Courts Building seeking to extradite McGuire to Arizona. But because McGuire is in the hospital, Judge Adam Bourgeois held the matter over until Friday.

"We're asking that because of the circumstances of him being in the hospital, that we continue the case," said Chicago Police Officer Elain Stancil.

McGuire was convicted by a Wisconsin jury in 2006 of molesting two boys from Wilmette's Loyola Academy during the 1960s. He now faces lawsuits and federal charges of traveling overseas with a minor in order to have sex with him.

According to Stancil, McGuire is being treated in Mercy Hospital for congestive heart failure and complications from diabetes. He is under police guard, she said.

If he is well enough, McGuire will appear in court Friday and then be extradited to Arizona, she added.

Mike Scerbo, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, confirmed the charges and said the alleged incidents occurred from 1988 to 2002. Maricopa authorities have a press conference planned for 1 p.m. Chicago time.
