MAYS LANDING - A former math teacher and assistant wrestling coach at St. Joseph High School in Hammonton was arrested late Tuesday on charges of inappropriately touching a student, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said.

Joseph W. Mauro, 30, of Forked River in Lacey Township, Ocean County, was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, meaning an act of sexual penetration was committed. Mauro was arrested at his home without incident, Housel said.

The charges arise from allegations that Mauro, while employed at St. Joseph, inappropriately touched a student in January. The charges were investigated by Sgt. David Weiss of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Crimes Against Children Unit and Patrolman Richard Jones of the Hammonton Police Department.

Superior Court Judge Michael Donio set Mauro's bail at $150,000 cash/bond, with the condition that Mauro have no contact with the victim or the victim's family. He was taken to the Atlantic County Jail, Housel said.

Mauro was fired from St. Joseph on Feb. 7.

Lynn Domenico, the principal at St. Joseph's, declined to comment on Mauro's arrest Wednesday, referring inquiries to Diocese of Camden spokesman Andrew Walton.

Walton said the school administration acted promptly to terminate Mauro's employment when it learned of the complaint.

"It was the school administration that notified law enforcement of the complaint, and the school administration notified school families of what happened," Walton said.

Walton referred to a letter Domenico sent home to parents, which stated that the matter "has been difficult for everyone involved," but the school's actions were necessary.

If convicted, Mauro could face between 10 and 20 years in prison.
