In a statement issued today, Mgr Mario Grech, the Bishop of Gozo, asked abuse victims for forgiveness after a commission assigned to uncovering child abuse discovered cases of both physical and psychological child abuse at Lourdes Home in Ghajnsielem.

In his statement, the Bishop said that there had indeed been "inadmissible behaviour involving minors that should never have taken place." Additionally, the Bishop also stated that "the commission also presented some recommendations that will ensure that such abuses will never happen again."

Expressing words of solidarity, Mgr Grech said in no uncertain terms that he wishes to personally "ask forgiveness from those who have suffered because of this behaviour. The Church wants to accompany these persons who were hurt by this behaviour."

In defense of the House where ther cases where discovered, the Bishop also said that "many other children, now adults, attest to the fact that they experience love and tender care in this (Loudes) Home. I sincerely hope and recommend that this Home will continue to give this service to the Church and to society".

Upon receiving the report that contained information about the abuse cases, Mgr Grech said that he immediately contacted the Superior General of the Dominican Sisters who run the home. She was instructed to carry out the Commission's recommendations accordingly.

Mgr Grech also stated how he has already "already appointed a team of experts who will accompany these persons in this healing process."
