LINCOLN, Neb. - A Catholic official in Lincoln says Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz (BRUSK-eh-witz) plans to see Pope Benedict XVI when he visits the country later this month, despite protests from a group angry about how the bishop has handled the church sex abuse scandal.

The group called the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests says Bruskewitz has snubbed efforts to address sex abuse by priests.

The pope plans to visit Washington and New York, April 15-20. Monsignor Mark Huber of the Lincoln Diocese says Bruskewitz was invited to join the pontiff.

In 1996, Bruskewitz issued a blanket excommunication of members of certain groups, including one critical of how the church handled abuse allegations. A Vatican official upheld the action last year.
