Parishioner Cheron Brylski from Our Lady of Good Counsel Church said she received word from people inside the New Orleans Archdiocese that up to 17 churches could soon close down.

Brylski also said that Archbishop Alfred Hughes will be informing dozens of parishes they will cease to exist by the end of 2008 even though many of the parishes are self sufficient communities.

The concerns were addressed by the New Orleans Archdiocese.

Spokesperson Sarah Comiskey said it's all part of phase two of the pastoral plan post Hurricane Katrina.

"There will be changes, we may see some mergers, we may see missions, we could see a lot of different things. Nothing is final until the Archbishop makes the announcement next week," Comiskey said.

But Brylski and many other parishioners don't understand why the details are secret.

"We don't feel this sacrifice is necessary and we hope he changes his mind," Brylski said.

Parishioners knew some changes were coming, but there is fear that dozens of churches will be closed for good and there is more fear that Hughes will also petition Rome that they cease to be recognized as communities.

Next week the diocese releases its pastoral plan. Church leaders said it will move the church forward into the future. The news conference will be April 9 at 11:15 a.m.
