ROANOKE, Va. -- A Catawba woman is accused of taking $50,000 from three churches where she volunteered as a treasurer.

A Roanoke County grand jury has indicted Lola Taylor Rowe on seven counts of embezzlement. Rowe served as treasurer for the McDonald's Mill, Catawba and Shiloh United Methodist churches. All three congregations are officiated by the same pastor and share the same treasury fund.

The superintendent of the Roanoke District of United Methodist Churches said he requested an audit, and the church turned over improprieties to Roanoke County police in 2007.

Roanoke County police Sgt. Mike Poindexter said the indictments span a period from early 2003 to late 2006.
