Pope Benedict XVI has started his US tour in a bid to help restore the scattered Catholic Church image marred with pedophile scandals.

"The pope will talk about it in detail at St Patrick's cathedral (in New York) during a speech to priests," Cardinal Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone said in an interview with the US network Fox News.

Benedict would ask all "to take part in a decisive way ... in building a culture of ethical integrity, justice (and) mutual trust, especially in the field of education," he said.

The US church suffered a serious embarrassment in 2002 when the archbishop of Boston acknowledged he had protected a priest who had sexually abused young congregants of his church.

Hundreds of priests have been involved in scandals, and several bishops were accused covering for the offenders.

During his six-day tour, the Pope will also meet with the US President George W. Bush.

The pontiff is expected to snub Bush for his Iraq invasion, a decision avoided by his predecessor John Paul II.
