Conservancy buys land to add to Congaree National Park

SOUTH CAROLINA

A land conservancy has bought 625 acres to add to the Congaree National Park. The addition is about one-third of the only large privately owned tract in a 30-mile wildlife corridor along the east bank of the Congaree River. The (Columbia) State reported that the Trust for Public Land bought the tract for $2 million and plans to sell it to the National Park Service when federal money becomes available. The 625 acres borders the main area of the park in southeastern Richland County. Other parts of the larger tract include the rest of a four-mile lake. A dirt road system also would be good for bike traffic, which isn't currently allowed in the park.

The Congaree is South Carolina's only national park. -- associated press
