A victims advocacy group has called for the United Nation's inquiry into an alleged attempt by Vatican to protect the abusive clergy.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) on Monday urged UN's investigation into what it dubbed Pope Benedict XVI and Vatican officials' complicity in the matter, said the DPA reports.

The demand was made while His Holiness is expected in the United States on his first visit to the country.

On Saturday, activists, including the groups' members, gathered in Washington DC to protest what they called the clergy within the Roman Catholic Church's using their authority to sexually exploit children.

"There are predator bishops out there that no one is holding accountable for their actions, that's the job of the Pope," SNAP's outreach director, Barbara Dorris said on the day.

Since 1950, Catholic clergy have been accused of thousands of cases of molestation.
