It should be a joyous occasion.

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in the United States yesterday. It is his first visit to this country since becoming pontiff.

Bravely, the first topic he took up was the pedophile priest scandal which has shaken the church in America for the last several years.

The pontiff said he was "deeply ashamed" of the sexual abuse scandal.

Pope Benedict vowed to do everything possible to avoid this problem in the future.

"We will do what is possible so this cannot happen again in the future," he said.

"It is more important to have good priests than many priests," he continued." Happily, the pope's visit will not just focus on negatives.

He is meeting with government officials and with the presidents of Catholic colleges during his visit.

Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton, Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta and U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski are among those who met the pope yesterday. Today, King's College President the Rev. Thomas O'Hara and Misericordia University President Michael MacDowell will join 230 of their peers in a meeting with the pope.

"It's a historic moment," said Leighton. That's the way it should be carried out and remembered.
