One of the most emotional moments of Pope Benedict's visit to the U.S. is said to be a private meeting he held with several victims of sexual abuse in Washington.

Afterwards he met with leaders of the Catholic Church, including Austin's Bishop Gregory Aymond.

Aymond said the pope praised the clergy's efforts to heal the community, but said the work is not finished.

"To the bishops, he reminded us of our responsibilities to reach out to the victims and to be the reconciler and to be the healer," Aymond said. "He reminded us that some of the situations were handled poorly by bishops."

Aymond is the chair of the committee that deals with the sex abuse cases.

He said the pope's comments are encouraging, but will not influence the way the committee works.
