To the surprise of many, he repeatedly expressed shame for the clergy sexual abuse scandal throughout the trip, but he coupled his concern and sympathy with calls for both the laity and the clergy to forgive and to come together to heal the deep wounds that divide the church. The only way to move forward, he suggested, is "in hope, in love for the truth and for one another."
