THOMASVILLE — A church treasurer faces an embezzlement charge after the church discovered more than $100,000 missing.

Teresa Mabe Swartz

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office said Teresa Mabe Swartz, 49, of 2028 Chestnut Street Ext. in High Point turned herself in Tuesday. She was charged with one count of felony embezzlement in excess of $100,000 and was released from the Davidson County jail on a $5,000 bond.

The sheriff's office said the pastor and other members of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church at 6424 Old Greensboro Road discovered on Dec. 20 a discrepancy in the church's financial records as well as unauthorized checks being disbursed by a church employee. A subsequent audit found that $104,521.66 had been embezzled from the church between January 2002 and December 2007, and Davidson County detectives launched an investigation.

Swartz's first court appearance was set for May 28.
