BUCYRUS — Danny Alan Akers, 28, met a teenage girl and her family at the Citi Church in Bucyrus about a year ago.

Today, Akers sits the Morrow County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

"He befriended the family and was caught having sex with the 14-year-old girl. He is facing 42 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor," Morrow County Sheriff's Detective Stoney Hall said Thursday.

Akers lived in Morrow County at that time, where the victim also lived.

"He was living here, where most of the incidents occurred. Some incidents occurred in Crawford and Holmes County, but ... he will face all charges in Morrow County, even though some of the physical evidence ... is from Holmes County," Hall said.

Akers was arraigned in Morrow County Common Pleas Court this week and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Detectives said Wednesday he was a church volunteer who used church activities as an excuse to engage in sexual contact with the teenage girl.

According to police, Akers volunteered to drive children to and from youth activities at Citi Church, which also has a facility in Mansfield.

"The investigation is ongoing, as there is a possibility of at least one other victim, although no one has come forward yet," Hall said.

The pastor of Citi Church said Akers seemed like the perfect volunteer.

"This should be a safe place to come, not a place where kids are taken advantage of," the Rev. Micah Pelkey said.
