A priest at a Catholic church in Lexington says that someone robbed the church overnight, making off with thousands of dollars that had been collected in weekend offerings from parishioners.

The robbery happened sometime before 7:15 a.m. Monday at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary on Clays Mill Road. Father Joseph Muench says he arrived at the church at 7:15 a.m. to prepare for morning mass and discovered the work of a thief instead.

"I noticed something wrong with the lock but nothing major," said Father Muench. "And then I opened the door and discovered the room was in disarray."

Muench says the thief smashed the safe inside the church building and then went next door to the business office and struck again, making off with thousands of dollars of offering money collected at the weekend's four services.

As Muench delivered this morning's scheduled mass, he says he reminded parishioners that the thief didn't take anything that couldn't be replaced. "Even in the gospel for (Monday's) mass, Jesus warns us that you're going to have trouble in this world but one day we'll overcome," he said. "And there's hope in that victory."

Muench says despite the financial loss, the church will continue to practice its open door policy, welcoming anyone who wants to worship inside the church.

Lexington police say so far they have no leads in the case.
