BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe — Rosemary Sibanda, who had an affair with retired Zimbabwean Archbishop Pius Ncube, died May 2 in a Bulawayo hospital where she had been admitted with pneumonia.

Archbishop Ncube, one of the most outspoken critics of his country's political leadership, resigned as archbishop of Bulawayo last year after the sex scandal.

According to The Herald government newspaper, Sibanda was described as a reserved person who cared for her neighbors. She was born April 19, 1964, in Filabusi, a village in Matabeleland South province in Zimbabwe.

A lawsuit alleging that the archbishop committed adultery was made public in July and state-run newspapers published photos they said were of Archbishop Ncube and a woman, taken with a concealed camera placed in the archbishop's bedroom. As a result of the photos, Onesimus Sibanda, a state-employed railway technician, claimed damages from Archbishop Ncube for the affair with his wife.

The camera is said to have been placed in the light in Archbishop Ncube's bedroom by Ernest Tekere, a senior intelligence operative for the Zimbabwean government for 20 years. Tekere allegedly was involved in the Gukurahundi campaign, in which government troops were responsible for the murders of about 20,000 people, as well as torture and human rights abuses in the western Matabeleland province from 1981 to 1987.

A Scottish newspaper, The Sunday Herald, published Archbishop Ncube's admission of the affair in March and said the archbishop was called to the Vatican to explain the allegations that he broke his vow of celibacy.

Archbishop Ncube was one of the most outspoken opponents of the government of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. Church officials have said that Archbishop Ncube believes his life is in danger and said that he frequently has been warned by secret supporters within Zimbabwe's ruling party "to be very cautious about where he goes."

It is not known where Archbishop Ncube is living, but many people believe he is in hiding in Great Britain.
