Church sources believe Pope Benedict will make the apology during his visit to Sydney in July for World Youth Day festivities. Such a gesture would be timely, coming after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's historic apology to our indigenous citizens. The Parliament's acknowledgment of past sins against Aborigines set a new course on the path to reconciliation. A papal apology could have the same effect for the tens of thousands who suffered as a result of church abuses.
