A new financial controls committee will help prevent fraud and misappropriation in parishes in the Buffalo Catholic Diocese.

Bishop Edward Kmiec created the committee in February. Members first met with the Bishop on May 7th.

The committee will work with the diocese to refine the present policy and procedure manual for parish business practices and finances. "In light of recent isolated breaches of honesty and integrity, we plan to strengthen compliance with the internal control system in our parishes," said Bishop Kmiec.

The committee is made up of a number of business leaders with years of experience in fiscal management and law enforcement. Committee members are:

• Rocco Diina-Former Buffalo Police Commissioner

• Patrick Finnerty-Chief Confidential Criminal Investigator for the Erie County District Attorney's Office from 1990 until 2007

• Christopher Henderson-Administrative Vice-President and Corporate Security Manager for M & T Bank

• Brian Keating-Western Region Chairperson of HSBC Bank USA

• Anthony Martino-Retired Partner of Buffalo C.P.A. firm Lumsden & McCormick, LLP

• Alfonso Oddo-Professor and Chair of the Department of Accounting at Niagara University

• Peter Vito-Acting Commissioner of Erie County Central Police Services
